17 june 2026

The Russia–ASEAN Business Forum, dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the establishment of relations, was held in the framework of the Russia–ASEAN Summit. The main theme of the Forum was "Russia–ASEAN: Partnership without Borders".

The opening ceremony was attended by ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Le Minh Hung, Minister of Economic Development of Russia Maxim Reshetnikov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan Alexey Pesoshin, and Chairman of the Russia–ASEAN Business Council Ivan Polyakov. The session was moderated by Sergey Katyrin, President of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Maxim Reshetnikov delivered a greeting from President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to the forum participants. The greeting highlighted the special importance of the Forum, which brought together leading representatives of the business communities of Russia and the ASEAN member states in Kazan. "Russian–ASEAN relations are 35 years old this year. During this time, we have accumulated solid experience in multifaceted cooperation, established stable ties, including between the ASEAN Business Advisory Council and the Russia–ASEAN Business Council, and created a good foundation for the future," the head of state stressed.

ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn thanked the organizers of the Summit and the Business Forum for creating a platform for dialogue. "Our community is working in an environment that is very different from what it was five years ago, with supply chains and entire industries changing. The need to strengthen our partnership is higher than ever before," he stressed. Kao Kim Hourn listed four main areas in which cooperation between Russia and the ASEAN countries is the most promising: energy, food security, high technology and logistics.

Minister Reshetnikov noted that over the past 10 years, Russia's trade with the ASEAN countries has grown by 58% and reached $21 billion, while Russian exports have increased by 44%. He stressed that Russia remains a reliable supplier of energy resources. "In the context of the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, Russia increased its supplies of mineral raw materials and oil by 40% in the first quarter of this year. The next step is long-term contracts for the supply of energy resources and the joint development of infrastructure for their storage and distribution. This will ensure energy security and competitive prices for ASEAN partners in the long term," Reshetnikov said.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung said that Vietnam is ready to become a bridge for establishing even closer ties between Russia and the ASEAN countries. He noted that in the context of global changes, relations should be based on trust, and supply chains should be stable and sustainable. "ASEAN and Russia should build more flexible, more stable and sustainable supply chains, and develop investments," the Prime Minister stressed. Le Minh Hung also called for strengthening cooperation in the fields of energy, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described how the multipolarity strategy helps the union maintain a balance of interests. "ASEAN adheres to a policy that involves building mutually beneficial relations with both the East and the West. This allows us to focus on the development of trade, business, strengthening bilateral ties and expanding regional cooperation for the benefit of our peoples," Anwar Ibrahim stressed.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced his readiness to increase the tourist flow from Russia. "Today we are talking about about 2 million tourists who come from Russia to our country on vacation every year. I'm sure there could be even more. We very much look forward to expanding opportunities in the field of tourism, as well as creating opportunities for medical tourism, because this is a very important factor in the quality of life of our peoples," the Prime Minister stressed. The head of government also highlighted energy, the creative economy, culture and education among the promising areas.

Ivan Polyakov, Chairman of the Russia–ASEAN Business Council, noted the special importance of the presence of such representative delegations from the Association countries as evidence of the unflagging interest in cooperation with Russia. According to him, there is a significant potential for increasing mutual trade, and the business community is aiming to increase trade volume to $100 billion, including using the opportunities of the recently signed agreement on a free trade zone between the EAEU and Indonesia. Among the priorities, he highlighted food and energy security, transport connectivity, the development of sovereign technologies and cybersecurity, as well as support for small and medium-sized businesses.

Alexey Pesoshin, Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan, stressed that ASEAN is one of the most dynamically developing international organizations with high investment potential, and the regions of Russia make a significant contribution to the development of Russian–ASEAN relations.

The Forum's program was built around four key areas: the development of cooperation in the field of information technology and artificial intelligence; international trade, food security and transport and logistics connectivity; EAEU–ASEAN cooperation in the field of energy, infrastructure and industrial cooperation, as well as traditional spiritual and moral values and models of state–religious relations.

At the invitation of the Russia–ASEAN Business Council, representatives of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council participated in the forum as speakers of panel sessions, including Dato' Charon Wardini Mokhzani, Co-Chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, Chairman of EXIM Bank Malaysia; Datuk Shireen Ann Zahara Muhiudeen, Deputy Chairman of the Asian International Arbitration Center; Oudet Souvannavong, President of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Lao PDR.

Following the results of the forum, a number of agreements were signed between the Russian and ASEAN business leaders.
